P9- Motion Flashcards
What type of quantity is distance and displacement.
1) Distance is a scalar quantity
2) Displacement is a vector quantity
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed has no direction whereas velocity does.
Speed is a scalar quantity whereas velocity is a vector qunatity
What is acceleration?
Acceleration is how fast you are speeding up
What is displacement?
Distance and direction in a straight line.
What is the formula for acceleration?
Acceleration = Change in velocity
——————
Time
What does uniform acceleration mean?
It means constant acceleration
What are the typical values of walking, running and cycling?
1) Walking- 1.5m/s
2) Running- 3m/s
3) Cycling- 6m/s
How can you work out the acceleration of an object?
1) Acceleration m/s2 = final velocity - inital velocity / time
What is velocity?
1) The velocity of an object is its speed in a given direction. Velocity is a vector quantity.
What does the gradient of a distance time graph represent?
1) The gradient of a distance time graph represents the objects speed.
How can you recognise certain characteristics of a distance time graph?
1) Stationary is a horizontal line.
2) Moving at a constant speed is a straight line that slopes upwards.
Explin the difference between a vector and a scalar.
1) A vector is a physical quality that has a direction as well as a magnitude.
2) A scalar is a physical quantity that only has a magnitude and does not have direction.
How can you determine the speed of an accelerating object?
1) The speed at any partcular time can be determined by using a tangent and measuring the gradient of the distance time graph.
What does the gradient on a velocity time graph represent?
1) It represents the acceleration
What can be used to measure velocity changes?
1) A motion sensor linked to a computer can be used to measure velocity changes.
