P8- Forces in Balance Flashcards
What does a scalar quantity have?
Give some examples
A scalar quantity has magnitude.
Speed
Distance
Temperature
What does a vector quantity have?
Give some examples
It has magnitude and direction.
Velocity
Displacement
Force
What is a contact force?
Give some examples
A force which must touch another force for the force to act
Air resistance
Friction
What is a non contact force?
Give some examples
A non contact force is a force which doesn’t need to touch another force to act.
Magnetic force
Gravitational force
What is the difference between weight and mass?
Mass is just the amount of stuff in an object whereas weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity
What is the formula for weight?
Weight = Mass x Gravitational field strength
What is the resultant force?
The resultant force is the total force on a point or object
What does a free body diagram do?
It shows you all the forces acting on an object
What is the formula for work done?
Work done = Force x Distance
What does it mean when an object is in equilibrium?
It means that the forces are balanced
What is the formula for moment?
Moment = force x distance
What do levers do?
They increase the distance from the pivot
What is displacement?
1) Displacement is distance in a given direction.
What does Newton’s thrid law state?
1) Newton’s 3rd law states that when 2 objects interact, they always exert equak and opposite forces on eachother.
Explain what a contact force is.
1) A contact force is a force that acts on objects only when the objects touch eachother.
