p9 Flashcards
axis
straight line around which rotation takes place
centripetal force
force required to maintain circular motion
centrifugal
apparent force that acts outward on an object moving around a center
linear speed
distance moved per unit of time
revolution
object turns around an external axis orbit
rotation
object turning around its own axis spin
rotational speed
the number of rotations per unit of time rpm
tangential speed
speed of something moving along a circular path
Who has a faster tangential speed, a person near the middle of a merry-go-round or near the outside edge?
The person on the outside edge
Who has a faster rotational speed, a person near the middle of a merry-go-round or near the outside edge?
Neither, they’re the same
Is the Earth revolving or rotating around the sun?
The Earth is revolving around the sun (outside axis)
Is the Earth revolving or rotating around its axis?
Rotating
When making a tight turn in a car why does your body get pushed in the opposite direction?
Centrifugal force - the car is turning but you’re trying to remain in a straight line, so you’re body is being “pushed outward”
Why is an object that is moving in a circle also accelerating?
Because it’s turning, since acceleration is changing direction and speed
What is the only thing that can cause an object to accelerate?
Force
