p11 Flashcards
Angular momentum -
inertia in circular motion (rotational inertia x rotational velocity); (AM=mass x velocity x radius)
Torque -
produces rotation (force x lever arm length)
Torque -
force required to produce rotation
Which will have a greater torque if the same amount of force is applied, a short arm wrench or a long arm wrench?
Longer, because torque is directly proportional to force and length.
The long arm wrench because it gives you more leverage
How can a big kid and a small kid still balance on a see-saw?
If the smaller kid sits at the very end of the seesaw and the bigger kid sits closer to the middle (center of gravity), then they will eventually balance.
Put the bigger kid closer to the fulcrum
How can a spinning skater increase their spin rate without applying a force?
They bring their arms/legs in closer to their body, which decreases their rotational inertia and therefore makes them spin faster
How can a spinning skater decrease their spin rate without applying a force?
They put their arms/legs out away from their body
