P8,P9,P10-Forces Flashcards
What is a vector
Physical quantaties with size and direction
What is displacement
The distance without a change in direction
What is scalar
Physcial quantaties with size but no direction
What is the difference between speed and velocity
Speed is how fast a quantity is moving (scalar)
velocity has size and direction and how fast it is going in that direction (vector)
How many mm = to 1N
10mm=1N
What is force measured in
Newtons
What is newtons third law of motion
for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is the formula for speed
Speed = distance/time
What is the letter for speed
V
How do you calculate acceleration
Acceleration=change in velocity/time taken for change
How do you calculate velocity
Distance/time
What is thinking time
The speed of your mind reacting to the danger ahead
What is a force
A push or a pull on an object that is caused by it interacting with something
What is a contact force
When two objects need to be touching for a force to act
What is a non-contact force
If objects dint need to be touching for a force to act
What is an interaction pair of forces
A pair of forces that are equal and opposite and act on two interacting object
What is weight
A force acting on an object due to gravity, therefore the same object on earth and mars will have the same mass but different weight
How do you calculate the weight of an object
Weight (N) = mass (KG) x gravitational field strength (N/KG)
What is the weight, mass, gravitational field strength triangle
————-Weight————-
Mass X Gravitational foeld strength
What is a resultant force
The sum of all the forces. For example; <200N 🚗100N> | <200-100> =<100N
When is work done on an object
When a force moves an object through a distance energy is transferred and work is done on the object
What is the equation to find work done
Work done (j)=force(N) x distance moved (m)
What is an equillibrium
All forces acting on an abject to form a resultant force of 0
What is electrostatic force
The force between two charged object
What is thrust
The force causing an object to move (like the force from a rocket engine)
What is air resistance
The friction of the air on a moving object
What is upthrust
The force of a fluid or gas (e.g water) pushing an object upwards
Bhat is reactant force
The force due to contact between two objects
What is compression
Forces that act inward on an object
What is friction
A force that opposes motion, occurs when objects rub off eachother
What is air resistance
A type of friction, occurs when an object moves through air
What device can weight be measured in
Newton-meter
Vhat is the centre of mass
The point through which the weight of the object reacts
What is the work done, force, distance moved formula triangle
Work(W)
Force(F)—————–Distance moved (s)
What is displacement
A distance between two points without change in direction
What is a vector?
Physical quantities with size and magnitude.
What is a scalar?
Physical quantities with size but no direction.
What are the two types of forces?
Contact and non-contact.
What is the difference between contact and non-contact forces?
Contact: when objects need contact to exert force.
Non contact: when objects dont need contact to contain force
What is Newton’s third law of motion?
For every force, there is an opposite reaction.
What is friction?
The force exerted by a surface against an object.
What is weight?
The force of gravity pulling things downward. It makes things fall and keeps them on the ground
What is upthrust?
It pushes things upwards when they are in a liquid, like boats.
What is thrust?
A forward force from an engine, for example.
What is reaction?
Stops things from going straight through solid objects.
What is air resistance?
Tries to stop things moving in the air.
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
If the resultant force acting on an object is equal, all the forces are balanced.
What is centre of mass?
The point at which its mass can be thought of as being concentrated.
