P7 magnetism and electromagnetism Flashcards
What way do the lines always go in a magnetic field
North to south
Where is the magnetic field strongest
At the poles of the magnet
What to forces can two magnets do
Attract or repel
Give 4 examples of magnetic materials
Iron
Steel
Nickel
Cobalt
What poles attract eachother
Opposite poles
What poles repel each other
Same poles
What shows the direction of magnetic fields
Compasses
How does a compass show the directions of a magnetic field. What does it have and what do you have to do
Inside a compass there is a bar magnet and the compass points in the direction of the magnetic field it is in. Move a compass around a magnet and trace its position on paper to build a picture of what the magnetic field looks like
What way does a compass when its not near a magnet and why
Always points north because the earth has its own magnetic field
What does the distance of the lines in a magnetic field show
The closer the lines the stronger the force the further the lines the weaker the force. Lines are closer when closer to the magnet
What are the two different types of magnet and what is the difference
Permenant magnet - produce their own magnetic field
Induced magnet - magnetic materials that turn into a magnet when put into a magnetic field
