P7: ELECTROMAGNETS + THE RIGHT HAND RULE Flashcards
What will a changing magnetic field induce?
an electric field
What will a changing electric field induce?
a magnetic field
What is the symbol that represents current going into the page?
⨂
What is the symbol that represents current coming out of the page?
⊙
What is the right hand rule?
-thumb of your right hand is direction of current
-fingers are the direction of the magnetic field
What is a solenoid?
a long coil of wire that sets up a magnetic field when current flows through it
Is the magnetic field stronger/weaker inside solenoid?
stronger inside solenoid
Is the magnetic field stronger/weaker outside solenoid?
weaker
What is an electromagnet?
-core (made from a magnetic material) placed inside a solenoid
-when current flows through the solenoid it magnetises the iron core
How can the strength of an electromagnet be increased?
-increasing no. of coils
-increasing current
What are the advs of an electromagnet compared to a permanent magnet?
-electromagnets can be turned on and off
-strength of electromagnets can be increased/decreased
