P3: DENSITY Flashcards
Density equation?
density (kg/m^3) = mass (kg) / volume (m^3) (ρ = m/V)
Which of the states of matter is the most dense and why?
-solids
-particles are closest together
Which of the states of matter is the least dense and why?
-gases
-lots of space between particles
Density practical
-measure mass of object using mass balance
-fill measuring cylinder with water and record volume
-drop object into water and measure increase in water level (this is equal to the volume of the object)
-repeat 3 times and calculate average volume
-work out the density of the object by doing density = mass / volume
What are some potential errors in the density practical?
-water splashing out
-parallax error (reading measuring cylinder wrong)
