P5: BRAKING Flashcards
What is thinking distance?
the distance the car travels between the driver seeing a danger and pressing the brakes
What is braking distance?
the distance the car travels between the brakes being pressed and the car stopping
How do you calculate stopping distance?
stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
What are factors affecting thinking distance?
-alcohol/drug use
-how tired the driver is
-any distractions to the driver
-speed of the car
What are factors affecting braking distance?
-wet/icy road conditions
-condition of brakes/tyres (worn brakes/tyres)
-speed of the car
What is a typical reaction time (range)?
0.2s - 0.9s
What is the relationship between thinking distance and speed?
directly proportional (2x speed = 2x thinking distance)
If you double speed what happens to braking distance?
braking distance quadruples (2x speed = 4x braking distance)
