P3: GAS PRESSURE Flashcards
Describe the motion of particles in a gas
particles in a gas move very quickly in random directions
What is gas pressure?
the total force exerted by all the particles over the area of the container
Pressure equation
pressure (Pa or N/m^2) = force (N) / area (m^2) (p = F/a)
What’s the relationship between pressure and volume?
-inversely proportional
-for a fixed mass of gas at a constant temperature:
pressure (Pa) × volume (m^3) = constant (pV = constant)
How can you increase pressure of a gas?
-increasing temp.
-increasing no. of particles
-decreasing volume of container
Why does increasing temp increase gas pressure?
-as temp increases particles gain kinetic energy
-therefore they move at higher speeds
-this causes more collisions between the particles and the walls of the container
-more collisions = greater force meaning an increase in pressure
