P6.6 - Gas Pressure And Temperature (Finished eh) Flashcards
Why does increasing the temperature of a sealed gas container increase the pressure inside it?
The energy transferred to the gas when heated increases the kinetic energy of its molecules so the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules increases. The average speed of the molecules increases with this and so the molecules hit the container walls more often and exerting a bigger force increasing pressure
What is the pressure of a gas caused by?
The random impacts of the gas molecules on the surfaces in contact with the gas
How would you use a smoke cel and microscope?
1) A small glass cell is filled with smoke 2) Light is shone through the cell 3) The smoke is viewed through a microscope 4) The smoke particles are constantly moving and changing directions
What does the random motion of smoke particles in the microscope smoke thing show about the particles of a gas?
It shows the random motion of gas particles. Air molecules repeatedly collide at random with each smoke particle. The air molecules are too small to see but smoke particles are much bigger
