P6.1 - Density (Finished) Flashcards
What is the density of a substance?
It’s mass per unit volume of a substance
What is the equation for density?
mass(kg)/volume(m3) = density(kg/m3)
What does the density of an object depend on?
What it’s made of and how tightly packed it’s particles are
How do you find the volume of a regular solid?
Measure it’s dimensions and multiply them
Which are the densest? Liquid, solid, gas
Solid is the most dense
How do you find the volume of an irregular solid?
1) Fill a eureka can with water 2) Put a measuring cylinder where water comes out of the eureka can 3) Gently lower the solid in with a string 4) Measure the volume of water displaced 5) convert that to cm3
How do you find the mass of a liquid?
1) Place a measuring cylinder on a balance and zero it 2) Pour in the water 3) Read the mass
Density = mass / volume
Don’t forget
How do you find the volume of a liquid?
Put it in a measuring cylinder and read the volume from the meniscus
What do you use to find the volume of a regular solid?
Digital calipers
