P6 - Matter Flashcards
Define density?
How much mass is in a certain volume
How do you calculate density?
Mass over volume
How do you measure the density of an irregular object?
The change in water level = volume of object
What is the correct apparatus to measure mass of the objects?
Mass balance
For an irregular object, what can do you place it in with water?
A eureka can
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas
What is 2 differences between billing and evaporating?
Boiling can happen at any part of the liquid whereas evaporation only happens at surface of liquid, evaporating is a lot slower
What is the state change from solid to gas?
Sublimation
What is the state change from gas to solid?
Deposition
Does gas have a fixed volume?
NO
Define latent heat?
Energy transferred to a substance when it changes state
What is kinetic energy dependant on?
Temperature
What is internal energy?
Kinetic energy + potential energy
Define internal energy?
The total energy held within the particles of a substance by their movement and relative positions to one another
Define specific latent heat?
The energy transferred per kilogram when a substance changes state
What is the difference between the specific latent heat of fusion and vaporisation?
Fusion is melting + freezing whereas vaporisation is boiling + condensing
Describe he relationship when volume increases and pressure decreases?
Inversely proportional
What increases gas pressure?
When particles collide more frequently with sides of the container, each collision is more forceful
