P10 - Forces in motion Flashcards
What are the 3 effects of a force?
Change direction, change shape, change balance
Define inertia?
The tendency of an object to stay at rest or to continue in uniform motion (constant velocity)
How do you calculate inertial mass?
M = F
A
Define mass?
Dependant on the quantity of matter in the object and is measuring kg, cannot be changed unless matter is removed
Define weight?
Force acting on object due to gravity, measured in newtons
What is the equation that links weight, mass and gravity?
W = M X G
What is terminal velocity?
When an object reaches a constant velocity when frictional force is equal and opposite to the weight
What factors affect braking force?
Mass of vehicle and speed of vehicle when brakes are applied
How do you calculate stopping distance?
Thinking distance + braking distance
What is thinking distance?
The distance travelled by vehicle in the time it takes for the driver to apply the brakes
What is braking distance?
Distance between the brakes being applied to when the vehicle is stationery.
What factors affect deceleration?
Friction between road and car tyres
What factors affect stopping distance?
Speed of vehicle, condition of vehicle, adverse road conditions, tiredness, alcohol
What is the conservation of momentum?
Momentum is always conserved in a closed system meaning the momentum before an event is equal to the momentum after an event
What is the equation for momentum?
p = M X V
