P3 - Energy resources Flashcards
What is a biofuel?
Any fuel taken from lining or recently living organisms, they are renewable sources of energy - carbon neutral
What can methane be used for?
Small gas fired power stations
What is the element used in nuclear power plants?
Uranium
How is energy made at a nucleur power plant?
Uranium atom nucleus is split which gives off energy making it very hot, energy then transferred by coolant into heat exchanger which gives off steam and turns steam turbines to generate electricity
What is the issue with a wind turbine?
Reliant on the weather
Give 3 examples of energy generated from water?
Wave power, hydroelectric power, tidal power
What is geothermal energy?
Comes from energy released by radiative substances deep within the earth, often built around volcanic areas (geothermal power stations)
Give 2 advantages if renewable energy sources and 3 disadvantages?
Never run out, no greenhouse gases - Cannot meet human demand, sound pollution from e.g. wind turbines
What costs are there when building around big energy usage?
Capital cost,, maintenance cost, cost of building new energy facilities
Give 2 problems with the supply and demand of energy?
Demand grows each day always increasing, higher in winter than in summer
What are reliability problems for certain energy facilities?
Hydroelectric - reservoir could run dry
Wind - Wind too weak
Waves - Waves too weak
Tidal - Height of waves Varys in seasonal (monthly)
Solar - None at night and cloudy in daytime
