P3.2 - Energy From Wind And Water (Finishedish) Flashcards
How does wind power work?
The force of the wind drives the turbine’s blades around turning a generator producing electric energy
What are 3 advantages of wind turbines?
- No fuel or running costs
- No permanent damage to the landscape, removed turbines remove effects
- No pollution
How does a wave generator generate electricity?
Waves make a floating generator move up and down turning a generator
What is one advantage and two problems of wave power?
Advantage - no pollution - no fuel cost Disadvantage: - Disturbing the seabed and habitats - Danger to boats - Fairly unreliable
How does hydroelectric power work?
1) A valley is flooded and big dam built
2) Water is allowed to flow through turbines turning a generator to produce enegy
How does tidal power/barrages work?
1) Water from each tide is trapped behind barrages
2) The water is then allowed to go out through turbines at a controlled speed
What are two disadvantages of tidal barrages?
- Prevents free access by boats
- Spoils the view
- Alters wildlife habitat
- Height of tide is variable
