P2.1 - Energy Transfer By Conduction (FMock?) Flashcards
1
Q
How do you test different materials as conductors (rods)?
A
Get three rods of different materials and put some wax on one end. Heat the other end of all 3 rods with 1 bunsen burner and see which ones wax melts first
2
Q
What is thermal conductivity?
A
The energy per second a material can transfer by conduction
3
Q
Give three things that affect the energy transfer per second through a lager of material?
A
- The temperature difference across it
- The thickness of it
- The thermal conductivity of it
4
Q
What is conduction?
A
The process by which vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
5
Q
Explain the process of conduction?
A
The particles in the part of the object being heated vibrate more and collide with each other. These collisions transfer kinetic energy between them.
