P2.2 - Infared Radiation (Finishedish) Flashcards
How can you detect infrared radiation with a thermometer and prism?
Shine a beam of light into the prism and place a screen ahead of where it comes out (as a spectrum). Place the thermometer next to the red end of the spectrum and is should show a temperature increase
Where is infrared radiation in the visible spectrum compared to light?
Beyond red
The higher the ___ of an object, the ___ the ___ of infrared radiation it emits
Temperature, greater, intensity (rad/time)
What is perfect black body?
An object that absorbs all the radiation that hits it and doesn’t TRANSMIT or REFLECT any radiation
What is black body radiation?
Radiation emitted by a body that absorbs all radiation incident on it
At what rate do objects at a constant temperature emit radiation?
They emit it at the same rate as they are absorbing it
If an object is warmer than it’s surroundings, how is it’s Infrared transfer affected?
It emits more infrared radiation than it absorbs, cooling down
An object that is ___ than it’s ___ absorbs more infrared radiation than it ___
Cooler, surroundings, emits
Does colour make a difference to infrared radiation absorption?
Yes, black better absorbs than white
What are the main factors that affect infrared radiation absorption/emission?
- Temperature of object compared to surroundings
- Surface of material
- Colour of material
What is infrared radiation’s wavelength like compared to light’s?
Longer in wavelength than visible light waves
