P3: Circuit Symbols Flashcards
The most common circuit symbols - names, symbols and descriptions
Electromagnet
Coil of wire with magnetic field
Reed Switch
Switch controlled by a magnetic field
Ammeter
Measures current in Amps
Light Dependent Resistor (LDR)
Resistance decreases when light is shone on it.
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
Lights up when a current is passed through IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
Diode
Only lets current flow in one direction
Variable Resistor
Gives control over the resistance/ current e.g. a light dimmer switch
Resistor
Reduces current (by increasing resistance)
SPST (SIngle Pole Single Throw) switch
Simple on-off switch/ makes and breaks the circuit
Buzzer
Turns electrical energy into sound
Motor
Turns electrical energy into kinetic energy (movement)
Lamp
Turns electrical energy into light energy
Fuse
Breaks the circuit if current is too high i.e. if there is a fault
Battery
Made up of several cells
Cell
Converts chemical energy to electrical energy in a circuit
