C3: Oxidation, Reduction, Thermal Decomposition Flashcards
What is oxidation?
A gain of oxygen.
During combustion both carbon and hydrogen atoms are oxidised.
Which elements tend to be found in fossil fuels?
Carbon
Hydrogen
Sulfur
What gas is made when sulfur in fossil fuels burns?
Describe what it is like.
Sulfur dioxide.
It is acidic gas and toxic.
Incomplete combustion
When there is a lack of oxygen.
Carbon monoxide is formed. (CO)
Carbon monoxide is…
…….a toxic gas.
It is colourless and odourless. It attaches to red blood cells and prevents oxygen from being carried.
What gases cause acid rain?
Sulfur dioxide
Nitrogen oxides
What are particulates?
Tiny solid particles containing soot (carbon) and unburnt fuels.
What is oxidation?
Lots of common metals, like iron and aluminium, react with oxygen to form oxides.
What element is used to reduce the oxides of iron and copper to make the metals
Carbon removes oxygen from the compound.
It is a reducing agent.
Reduction is………
….the loss of oxygen
What do we call it when one compound is heated to produce 2 products?
Thermal decomposition.
How do we know that the following reaction is a thermal decomposition reaction?
Hydrogen peroxide –> Water + Oxygen
Because one compound is breaking down to produce 2 products.
Hydrogen peroxide –> Water + Oxygen
Copper carbonate (+ heat) –> ?
Copper carbonate (+ heat) –> Copper oxide + Carbon Dioxide
Copper carbonate + heat –> Copper oxide + Carbon Dioxide
What is the reactant(s) in this reaction?
Copper carbonate
Copper carbonate + heat –> Copper oxide + Carbon Dioxide
How could we test that this gas given off in this reaction is carbon dioxide?
Bubble the gas through lime water
If it turns cloudy the gas is carbon dioxide
