P2c Flashcards
1
Q
What are step-up transformers used for?
A
-to reduce the current and increase the voltage from the generator to the grid
2
Q
What does a high current do when transmitting lots of electrical power?
A
-high currents makes cables get hot, which is inefficient as a lot of the heat goes to waste and money is wasted
3
Q
What are step-down transformers used for?
A
- to reduce the voltage to make it safe for household use
- between the grid and homes
4
Q
What is off-peak electricity?
A
- electricity supplied at night
- it is often cheaper
5
Q
What are some advantages off-peak electricity?
A
- cost-effective for electrical companies as power stations can’t be turned off at night
- cheaper for consumers to buy electricity during off-peak electricity
6
Q
What are some disadvantages of off-peak electricity?
A
- risk fire is increased with more appliances going at night bu no one is watching
- you may stop enjoying the use of electricity during to day and wait for the cheapers
7
Q
What are kilowatt-hours?
A
-the amount of electrical energy converted by 1kW appliance left on for 1 hour
8
Q
What is power rating and how does it work?
A
- power rating of an appliance depends on the voltage and current it uses
- power is measured in watts and kilowatts, W and kW
