P2.4 Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is a magnetic field?
A region of space within which a magnet experiences a force
What is a plotting compass?
A small compass used to find the shape of a magnetic field
What are magnetic field lines?
Lines that are drawn to represent a magnetic field
What are poles?
The ends of a magnet in which the magnetic field is the strongest
In a coil with a singular turn, how would you increase the strength of its magnetic field?
Increase numb of turns of wire in the coil
Increase current through coil
Add soft iron core
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire which carries an electrical current
What are the 3 features of a magnetic field that is made by a solenoid?
The field is similar to to that from a bar magnet, with poles at both ends of the magnet
Increasing the current increases the strength of the field
Increasing the numb of turns will also increase strength of the field
When using the right hand grip rule=, what direction will your thumb point to?
The northern pole of the magnet
How does a direct voltage flow?
In the same direction from a fixed positive terminal to the fixed negative terminal of a supply
What can provide a direct current?
A battery or cell
How does an alternating voltage flow?
Changes size and direction in a regular and repetitive way
What can provide an alternating current?
Mains System
