P16 - space Flashcards
what is a satellite (natural and artificial)
an object that orbits another, moon is natural, weather satellite is artificial
how are stars formed
nebula (cloud of dust and gas), collapses in on itself due to gravity, protostar, starts nuclear fusion when gets how enough
why does the volume of a main sequence star stay constant
fusion pressure = gravity
what does a star become after running out of hydrogen
red giant, red supergiant if large enough
what does a red giant / supergiant become
red giant - white dwarf then brown dwarf
smaller red supergiant - neutron star
larger red supergiant - black hole
what is escape velocity
the velocity needed to overcome gravity and escape orbit
what are the two types of artificial satellite
low polar - covers whole world
geostationary - higher up, stays on one point over equator
what is redshift
as the emitter of light moves away, the light is stretched and becomes more red
how does redshift support big bang
more redshift in further away galaxies, must be moving faster, so all came from one point
what is CMBR
cosmic microwave background radiation, the radiation left over from the start of the universe
