P14 - light Flashcards
what is reflection
light bouncing off of a reflective surface
what is the law of reflection
the angle of incidence = the angle of reflection
what is the difference between specular and diffuse reflection
specular (shiny) is where the light waves bounce off a flat surface in parallel, diffuse (matte) is where the light waves bounce off a bumpy surface in different directions.
what is refraction
when light enters an object of a different density it bends towards the normal (think of the car analogy)
why are objects certain colours
they reflect that colour light and absorb the best
what is the difference between a concave and convex lens
concave bends light outwards - two caves
convex bends light inwards
what is the focal point of a convex lens
the point where if all the light rays go in parallel that they cross
what is the focal length
the distance from the focal point to the centre of the lens
for a convex lens, if the object is more than twice the focal length away, what will the image be
inverted, diminished, real
for a convex lens, if the object is more than the focal length but less that 2 focal lengths away, what will the image be
inverted, enlarged, real
for a convex lens, if the object is closer than the focal length, what will the image be
upright, enlarged, virtual (look on p14 one note page)
for a convex lens, how do you make the focal length shorter
more curvy or thicker lens
for a concave lens, what will the image be
upright, diminished, virtual
