P1.3.1 - Gas Pressure And Temperature Flashcards
Why does a balloon get bigger when you blow it up?
You are increasing the number of air particles inside.
Why do the particles do inside the balloon and what does this produce?
The particles collide with the inside of the surface of the balloon producing a very small force. There are lots of collisions each producing an outward force over a certain area.
What does an outward force over a certain area produce?
Gas pressure
What happens if you add more air particles o a container that cannot expand?
The pressure increases
How does temperature affect gas pressure?
Higher temperature gives gas particles a higher average speed and makes them collide more often with the sides of a container. This produce a bigger once over an area and therefore a bigger pressure.
How do you measure the pressure of something?
Pressure gauge
What is the pressure of a gas measure in?
Pascals (Pa)
What does 1 pascal equal?
One Newton per square meter (1N/m^2)
How many pascals is 1 kilo pascal (kPa)?
1000 Pascals (Pa)
Can you work out absolute zero on a graph showing the relation between temperature and pressure?
Yes if you extrapolate
You continue the graph with a dotted line as an estimate for 0
