P1.2.2 - Energy And Temperature Flashcards
What is temperature?
It tells you how hot or cold something is
Average kinetic energy of the particles
How can you measure temperature?
Thermometer
Temperature sensor
What are the units of temperature?
Degree Celsius
Kelvin (K)
What is the difference between temperature and energy?
Energy is measured in Joules (J)
Energy depends on the arrangement of particles and how fast they are moving
Temperature tell you the average kinetic energy of the particles
What happens when you heat something?
The energy stored within the system changes, increasing the temperature
Produce a change of state (solid to liquid)
Make chemical reactions happen (wood burning)
What are changes of state examples of?
Physical changes
What are the properties of a physical change?
You do not make new substances
Easy to reverse as the particles are simply rearranged
What is a chemical reaction an example of?
Chemical change
What are the properties of a chemical change?
Involve changing atoms in different ways
Cannot be easily reversed
