P13 Electromagnatism Flashcards
What do all magnets have?
Two poles which produce a magnetic field
Which way do magnetic lines always travel?
North to south
Shere is the magnetic field the strongest?
The poles
When you are closer to the magnet
What is the force between magnets?
The force is always attractive
What happens when 2 poles of the same meet?
They rebel each other
What happens when two poles of the same meet?
They attract
What is a feature of permenant magnets?
They produce there own magnetic field
What are induced magnets?
What haopens to an induced magnet if it’s magnetic field is taken away?
It quickly looses it’s magnetic field
What happens when a current flows through a wire?
An magnetic field is created around the wire
How can you change the direction of the magnetic field?
Changing the direction of the current
What is the Right-Hand thumb rule?
Using your right hand you point yout thumb in the direction of the current and the way in chich your finders are pointing is the direction of the magnetic field
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire
How can you increase the strength of a magnetic field?
Increased the amount of coils as they will then be closer together
How may you increase the power of a solenoid?
Core - using an iron core
Coils - increasing the number of coils
Currnet - increasing the currnet
What happens when a current-carring wire is put between magnetic poles?
The magnet and the conductor exters a force on each other - this causes the wire to move
What is the motor effect?
The reason why a wire moves when it is placed between two magnetic poles
When will a wire experience the most force in the motor effect?
When it is at 90 degrees (perpendicular)
When will a wire experience no force in the motor effect?
If the wire is parallel
In what direction does the force always act in the motor effect?
At right angles from the magnetic field and the direction of the currnet
