How do you test for sugars

A

Add Benedicts solution to the food
Heat in a water bath
It will go green, yellow or brick red depending on how much sugar is present

A

Add a few drops of iodine

It will change from orange to blue-black if starch is present

Add biuret solution to food

The solution will change from blue to pink or purple if protein is present

A

Add Ethanol solution to the food

If lipids are present, a cloudy white layer will form on top

How to prepare solid food for food tests

A

Use a pestle and mortar to break the food up
Add to test tube with distilled water and mix it together using a glass mixing rod
Filter it use filter paper and a funnel, collecting a solution
