Define incarnation
God taking on the human condition of Jesus
Define sacrament
Rites and rituals through which the believer receives a special gift of grace; outwards sin of inward grace
Define Son of God
Second person of the Trinity; became flesh in Jesus
Define Son of Man
Title that refers to either just human being or human given power by god.
Define abortion
The removal of a foetus from the womb to end a pregnancy
Arguments against abortion
- Human life begins from conception (Elizabeth felt child leap in womb)
- there are organisations to help women having problems either financially or emotionally
- Children with severe disabilities should not be destroyed as god made everyone perfect in imago dei
What does the Ichthus mean?
- When Christians used to be persecuted they used to draw these to indicate Christian prayer meetings.
- Name means: Jesus Christ’s Son of God, Saviour
What do the Alpha and Omega mean?
- Alpha and Omega are first and last letters of Greek alphabet so God is involved from beginning to end
- Reference to both God An Jesus
- Used in churches, vestments, drawing, Paschal Candle (represents Risen Christ)
What does the Chi-Rho mean?
- Monogram used by early Christians
- Formed by first two letters of Greek word Christ when written in capitals: Chi=X and Rho=P
- Reminder of death of Jesus (saved the world as he was Messiah)
What does Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro symbolise?
Reminder of cross and how Jesus died out of love for us
What does the Sacred Heart symbolise?
Reflects self-giving human love Jesus had for all people.
What does the crucifix symbolise?
Reminder of pain and suffering Jesus went though when he died
What does the Dei Verbum 4 passage show about Incarnation?
- God is revealed in Jesus who brings salvation to all
- Sent as a man to be among his people; stresses his human nature
How does Verbum Domini 12 passage show the understanding of Incarnation?
- Word of God limited himself so that humans could make sense of God’s love
- Jesus always chose to do God’s will no matter what it cost him
- Through dying Jesus gave himself to god
What did it mean when Jesus referred to himself as the Son of Man?
- May have been referring to himself as normal person
- May have been saying he was Percival authority of God
- If Jesus was not fully human the pain wouldn’t have bothered him, but he didn’t look forward to it.
