P1 energy Flashcards
What is potential energy
A store of energy
How is elastic potential energy stored
Through the stretching or compression of an object
How is gravitational potential energy stored
Through the height of an object, restricting it to become kinetic energy
What is kinetic energy
The energy to make an object move
How can you increase kinetic energy
Increase mass or velocity
When is work done
Work is done only by a force when an object moves
More work is done by
Increasing the force or when the object moves further (bigger displacement)
When work is done what also changes
The kinetic energy. Work has to be done to reduce kinetic energy to bring an object to o a stop
What is power
The transfer of energy or the rate of doing work
What is specific heat capacity
The time taken to raise 1kg of a material by 1 degree
The amount of energy needed to change the temperature of the object depends on
It’s mass
What it is made of
The temperature change
Required practical investigating specific heat capacity
Finding the specific heat capacity of brass. By putting room temperature brass in boiling hot water and seeing how long it takes to heat up by 1 degree. Then putting hot brass in cold water till brass decrease by 1 degree
How can you reduce energy transfer
Lubrication
Thermal insulation
What does insulation do
Reduces the amount of energy transfer by conduction. The lower the thermal conductivity the thicker the material
Law of conservation of energy
The useful output can not be larger than the input
