P1 Back + Trunk/Abdomen - Nerves and Innervations Flashcards
Dorsal Root of Peripheral Nerve: Location, fiber type, and direction
Posterior, Afferent (sensory), and information to CNS
Ventral Root of Peripheral Nerve: Location, fiber type, and direction
Anterior, Efferent (motor), and information from CNS
What is in a spinal nerve?
Afferent (sensory) and Efferent (motor) nerves
Dorsal Primary Rami: Innervation, fiber types
innervates posterior neck and trunk,
afferent and efferent fibers
Ventral Primary Rami: Innervation, fiber types
innervates anterolateral neck, trunk; UE/LEs
Afferent and efferent fibers
Where do cervical vertebra exit
exit the vertebral column ABOVE vertebral segment with same name
Where does cervical spinal nerve C8 exit?
Between C7 vertebra and T1 vertebra
Where do all of the other spinal nerves exit?
exit below the vertebral segment with the same name
What is a dermatome?
area of cutaneous sensory information associated with specific spinal nerve
What can cutaneous testing find?
the vertebral level of injury & the specific site along the sensory pathway that the lesion occurs
When does PARAPLEGIA occur?
Lesion at the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral vertebral levels
When does TETRAPLEGIA occur?
Lesion at cervical vertebral level
What is the Neurological Level of Injury?
Classification system that describes lowest segment of spinal cord where the individual has full ROM & cutaneous sensation intact
What does C6 tetraplegia mean?
(crush) injury to C6 vertebral body,
sensory impairments innervated by C7 and caudal,
and that C6 spinal nerve remains INTACT
