P1 1b movement and position -1c LM Flashcards
what do all moving objects have?
momentum
what does it mean by momentum is conserved?
total momentum before = total momentum after
when two objects collide which direction will it end up going?
goes to the direction with the most force
eg. the object moving to the right hit the object going toward it with a greater momentum so both objects end up moving to the right
what happens when two objects collide?
they basically become one object `
what happens when a force is acted on a moving object?
if the velocity increased the momentum also increases
what happens when a car crashes?
the momentum will decrease to 0 almost instantly which outs a huge amount of force of the people and car
how do you reduce the chance of injury?
to spread the change in momentum over a longer period of time
this reduces the force the people will experience
- increase the time is takes for momentum to be lost
how do cars reduce injury?
- the crumple zones
- seatbelts
- air bags
how do crumple zones help?
small amount of extra time for the car to lose momentum as it crumples
how do seatbelts help?
- stop the person from flying out the car
- stretchy to slow you down slowly
how do air bags help?
lose momentum more slowly
what is a moment?
the rotational or turning effect of a force
how does perpendicular force effect the moment?
the bigger (longer) it is the bigger the moment and vice versa
where is the perpendicular distance
between the pivot and force arrow
is the beam is balanced what does that mean?
total clockwise moments = total anticlockwise moments
