Q

how do you investigate the changes of state?

A
  • place ice cubes in the beaker
  • place thermometer in beaker
  • place the black on the tripod and gauze, slowly start to heat
  • as beaker is heated take regular temp measurements
  • continue whilst the substance changes state

the graph should show a flat region where the ice is melting

Q

how does the heat get transferred to a substance without changing the temperature?

A

the thermal energy doesn’t contribute to the kinetic energy, instead its used to weaken the bonds between particles

Q

practical specific heat capacity?

A
  • place beaker on balance and press tare
  • add water (250ml) and record the mass
  • place immersion heater and thermometer in water
  • connect the circuit, ammeter in series with power supple and immersion heater, and the voltmeter in parallel with the immersion heater
  • record initial temp
  • turn on power and start timer
  • record voltage from voltmeter and current
  • continue to record temp and the rest every minute
  • repeat replacing water with things
