P0werP0int 9: Campyl0bacter Flashcards
What is thought to export virulence factors?
flagellar export
What is an example of an exported virulence factor?
CiaB (strains without it are less virulent)
What is common to patients with blood in their stools?
plasmid pVir
What is encoded in the plasmid pVir?
Type 4 SS
What is the toxin called?
Cytolethal Distending Toxin (CDT)
What are the components of CDT?
Coded by cdtA, cdtB, and cdtC
Which 2 components of the CDT toxin bind to the cell membrane ?
CdtA and Cdt C
-allow entry of Cdt B
What does the CdtB do?
Enters the nucleus, causes DNA damage, leads to disruption of mitosis and cell death
What causes the diarrhea?
CdtB kills the cells of the epithelium, leading to permeability
Where is it most found?
water and chicken
The outbreak was due to people eating what?
- chicken liver
- also from handling pets
Where is it found?
Canada, US, all of the world
What can it cause?
- bacteremia: immunocompromised individuals ; associated with c.jejuni. C.coli, c.fetus
- brain abscess: c. fetus
- esophageal disease (GERD / barret esophagus): c.cnscicous
- Inflammatory bowl disease
- periodontis
- paralysis: Guillam barr syndrome (GBS) or fisher miller syndrome (MFS) ; by c.jejuni; cross reaction of antibodies with peripheral nerve surface gangliosides
