  • Corticosteroids are long term usage, not for acute attacks
  • Ensure good oral hygiene for Phenytoin. Thrush can form and dry mouth.

  • Used for Chronic Asthma Prevention, Nasal Symptoms during seasonal allergies
  • Meds: Fluticasone (Flonase), Budesonide, Beclomethasone
    • “sone” or “sonide” endings -
  • Side Effects: UR Infection, Cough, Dry Eyes, Headache, Dizziness

Sympathomimetic Decongestants

A
  • Used to decrease nasal swelling
  • Meds: “-zoline” “-ephrine”
    • Oxymetazoline, Xylometazoline, Synephrine, Phenylephrine

s/e: nervousness, insomnia, irritability, headache, palpitations, tachycardia
adv: dizziness, nervousness, or trouble sleeping.

NI:

  • Reinforce Client Education
  • Ensure Client is taking full course of medication

Client Edu:

  • Stop taking medicine if adverse effects occur.
  • This medication will make you dizzy
  • Avoid Alcohol and marijuana, it will increase the dizziness
  • Take missed dose as soon as possible but skip if it’s time for the next dose. DO NOT DOUBLE DOSE.

Antihistamines

A
  • Used to relieve allergy symptoms
  • s/e: Drowsiness, tiredness, and dry mouth
  • adv: hives, rashes, difficulty urinating, weakness

NI:

  • Ensure client education is reinforced
  • Be Aware of diabetic clients (Sugar)
  • Monitor BS and Vitals
  • Alert the doctor if adv effects occur

Client Edu:

  • Stop taking medicine if adverse effects occur.
  • This medication will make you dizzy
  • Avoid Alcohol and marijuana, it will increase the dizziness
  • Be advise if you are diabetic, medicine contains sugar
  • Contact your HCP if adv effects occur.

-Meds: Azelastine, Cetirizine, Chlorpheniramine, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), Levocetirizine, Loratadine

  • Used to treat cough and congestion causing by common cold, bronchitis, and other breathing illnesses.
  • meds: Guaifenesin (Mucinex)
