Oxygen Therapy Flashcards
What is used to determine oxygen saturation
ABG and oximeter
How much does the fraction of inspired oxygen (Fi02) increase by every 1L/min?
4%
What percentage of oxygen and amount per min is required with high-concentration cases?
100% or 15L via mask
When should high concentrations of oxygen be used?
in uncomplicated type 1 respiratory failure, with little risk of hyperventilation.
When should low concnetrations of oxygen be used?
When patients are at risk of CO2 retention or have low 02 requirements
What should not be used with oxygen and why?
Amiodarone because it can increase the risk of adult respiratory distress syndrome and rapid onset of respiratory failiure
What percentage of oxygen should be the aim in those not at risk of type 2 resp failure?
94-98%
What percentage of oxygen should be the aim in those who are at risk of type 2 hypercapnic resp failure?
88-92%
What are the principles of criteria of the long-term oxygen therapy
p02 < 7.3kPA on ABG, or <8.0kPA with complications, non-smoker
When is nasal cannulae used?
Mild hypoxaemia when the patient is not critically unwell.
How much oxygen does a nasal cannulae deliver?
24-30% O2
When should a simple face mask be used?
Mild to moderate hypoxia
How much oxygen does a simple face mask deliver?
30-40%
What is a disadvantage of a simple face mask?
Risk of aspiration if patient vomits whilst wearing the mask
What is a disadvantage of a nasal cannulae
High flows (>4L/min) dry and irritates the nasal passage
