Oxygen Lab Flashcards
1-6 L/min
Low flow nasal cannula
Concentrated oxygen at low flow rate
1-15 L/min
Oxygen conserving nasal cannula
Up to 60 L/minute
High flow nasal cannula
5-10 L/min
Simple face mask
15 L/min
Keep bag inflated
Face mask with reservoir bag as non-rebreather
10-12 L/min
Keep bag inflated
Face mask with reservoir bag as partial non-rebreather
High flow
4-12 L/min
24-60% FiO2 (fraction of inspired oxygen)
Venturi Mask
Used for humidification and when tight fitting masks are not tolerated
8-12 L/min
Face Tent
Non-rebreather
Used in emergency settings
Used in OR
Used Pre-ECT to hyperoxygenate patients
Resuscitation Mask
Check orders
May state to “maintain O2 at 95% or higher” or may indicate “O2 at 7 L/face mask.”
Set at prescribed flow rate
Titrate until SpO2 is within prescribed range
Use flow regulator to adjust flow rate
When line is through the middle of the ball, it is set correctly
Setting flow rate
Monitor for skin breakdown
Check equipment every shift
Ensure flow rate is set correctly
Assess SpO2 every shift
Humidification
Care considerations
Delivery device (nasal cannula, face mask, etc)
Liter flow (written as 3L/nasal cannula, 5L/non-rebreathe, etc)
Document education provided to patient/family
Patient response to oxygen
Documentation must include
Blood oxygen saturation between 88 and 92%
COPD
