For the relief of the symptoms of bladder instability associated with voiding in patients with uninhibited neurogenic or reflex neurogenic bladder.

1 5mg immediate release tablet given 2-3 times daily. Maximum of 20mg/day

A

May decrease the effects of phenothiazines and haloperidol. May cause tar dive dyskinesia when used with haloperidol. Additive effects may be seen with other anticholinergic agents.

What are the contraindications of Oxybutynin Cl?

A
  • Contraindicated in uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, and gastric retention.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal or liver impairment, gastrointestinal obstruction, ulcerative colitis, intestinal atony, and myasthenia gravis.
  • Use with caution in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and in those taking drug that can cause or exacerbate esophagitis (such as biphosphonates)
  • Heat prostration can occur in the presence of high environmental temperature
  • Pregnancy Category B

Dry mouth, drowsiness, confusion, agitation, blurred vision, diarrhea, nausea. Side effects may decrease with prolonged use.

What should the RPh tell the patient?

A
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to hot weather
  • May cause drowsiness. Use caution while operating machinery or when mental alertness is required.
  • If a dose is missed, take it ASAP. If the time is closer to next dose than missed dose, skip the missed dose. Do NOT double doses.
  • Swallow extended-release tablets whole. Do not crush, split, chew
  • The semipermeable membrane tablet shell of the extended-release tablet passes through the GI tract intact and may be found in the stool
