Oxides Flashcards
What is an oxide
Compound of oxygen and another element
How are oxide made
Burning element in air
2Mg + o2 —> 2mgo
What are the 4 type of oxides
- Basic oxide
- Acidic oxides
- Amphoeteric oxide
- Neutral oxides
What are acidic oxides
Non-metallic oxide which reacts with water to form an acid
React w alkali to form salt and water
I.e co2 and NAOH—> na2co3 + h2o
I. E co2 + h20 —> h2co3
What are some acidic oxides
Sulfur dioxide ( sulfurous acid h2so3) Sulfur trioxide (sulfuric acid h2so4) Nitrogen dioxide (no2 hno3 nitric acid )
Acidic oxides damage
Acidic rain cause harm to buildings w limestone and marble
Acidic oxides react w
Alkalis to produce salt and water only
What is a basic oxide
Metallic oxide which reacts w an acid to produce salt and water only
What can basic oxides be used for
Neutralise acids
Quicklime Cao and slaked like ca(oh)2 raise ph of soil b4 it’s too acidic
Basic oxide soluble in water.
Alkaline solution
NAOH + h2o —> 2naoh
Example of basic oxides
Mgo
Cao
Bao
Basie vs alkali
Alkali is special base as soluble in water
Dissolved in water to give hydroxide ions
Water insoluble metal oxide react w an acid is base not alkali
Soluble metal oxides dissolve in water to give soluble metal hydroxides
Wate insoluble base
- Oxide
All metal oxides are warer insoluble
I.w mgo and cuo
- Hydroxides
All metal hydroxides are water insoluble
I.e cu(oh) 2 fe(oh)2
Water soluble base alkali
- Oxide
Na2o and k2o and Cao (sparingly soluble ) - Hydroxides
NAOH, Koh, ca(oh)2 (sparingly soluble )
What are amphoeteric oxides
Metallic oxide show both acidic and basic properties
Amphoeteric oxides react w both acid and alkalis to produce salts and water only
