oxidation and reduction Flashcards
What is reduction?
A gain of electrons by a reactant in any reaction
What is oxidation?
A loss of electrons by a reactant in any reaction
What happens in a redox reaction?
reduction and oxidation take place at the same time
What is an oxidising agent?
A substance that much accepts electrons
(found as a reactant in the reduction reaction)
What is a reducing agent?
A substance which donates electrons
(found as a reactant in the oxidation reaction)
How to write complex redox equations?
1-balance anything that’s not hydrogen or oxygen
2-balance the oxygens with molecules of water
3-balance the hydrogens with H+
4-balance the charges with electrons (in most positive side
What can act as reducing and oxidising agents?
+examples
compounds, group ions and molecules
-hydrogen peroxide-molecule-oxidising agent
-dichromate and permanganate ions-group ions-strong oxidising agents in acidic solutions
-carbon monoxide-gas-reducing agent
Uses of oxidising agents
widely employed because of the effectiveness with which they can kiss fungi and bacteria and can inactivate viruses
good for use as black for clothes and hair
Are neutralisation reactions redox reactions
NO
