Oxazolidinones (Linezolid) Flashcards
What is the SOA for Linezolid?
Resistant Gram (+) Bacteria such as:
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE)
Listeria
Linezolid is an alternative to Daptomycin for treating infections caused by VRE.
What is the MOA of Linezolid?
Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA which prevents the initiation complex. This unique mechanism reduces the likelihood of cross-resistance with other antibiotics.
What is important lab work to monitor on Linezolid?
Weekly monitoring of CBC due to risk of thrombocytopenia, when the drug is used for more than 10 days.
What drug-drug interactions are important to monitor with Linezolid?
SSRIs, MAOIs, and tyramine-containing foods can cause serotonin syndrome (confusion, hyperreflexia, hyperthermia)
What are tyramine containing foods?
Aged cheeses, smoked meats, fermented products
