- 5 billionaires own most of uk media- Murdoch, Desmond, Rothermore, Barclay brothers (media moguls)
- over 70% of the newspaper market is owned by News UK, Daily Mail, General Trust and reach PLC, outside of newspapers, sky, ITV, channel 5, at all big players in the media industry - more people get news from TV now
What are some of the features of media ownership?
Horizontal integration – media companies expanding through merging of buying competition
Media convergence - companies joining other companies for their services of products
Global conglomerates -
What is the pluralist view of ownership and control?
The audience are in control as they have a lot of choice over what they consume – this is done thru free market – owner has to meet the demands of the customer - is an active view - media is demand led - due to a vast array of options selection of media is easy - product only survives based on attraction - marxists say they are manipulated and don’t have three choice
What is meant by Public Service Broadcasting?
Media services not owned by private companies, but by the government e.g. channel 4 and BBC, channel 4 gets revenue from advertising whilst BBC gets it from free license (people who own TVs), neo-Marx say that because the bbc is mainly middle-class, white men they produce conservative views, but in actual fact, the BBC is fairly independent
What is the Marxist view on ownership and control?
Trad Marx - who owns the media controls it - owned by ruling class - editors and journalists are instructed by the owners to spread the dominant ideology- media creates a false consciousness and seeks to justify power and privilege of bourgeoise - MILIBAND - workers won’t resist instructions in fear of losing their jobs.
What is the neo-Marxist view on ownership and control?
- owners typically choose workers that hold the same views as them - murdoch and Desmond did this so they didn’t have to micro manage companies.
- GMUG - in 70s the media was predominantly white male m/c - despite supposedly remaining neutral in terms of who’s in power they typically sided with them - reproduces dominant ideology
What is the post modern view on ownership and control?
- it’s impossible for owners or editors to control the media - postmodernists main view is about audiences control over content - their choice is now greater than ever - people are exposed to media 24/7 (media saturation) - due to this editors can’t control everything - due to this constant exposure baudrillard says people can no longer distinguish between fake and reality. People can express their own narrative showing how they control it. This view is criticised for being too optimistic.
How is the Marxist view on ownership and control criticised?
Neo Marxists say that owners don’t have time to control the content that is produced due to them owning multiple companies, the real control it down to editors
