What is the functionalist view on audiences?

A

Media performs secondary socialisation, it plays an important role in creating a value, consensus, and social solidarity, medium makes more people aware of the norms and values outside of their homes. This is done through child TV - the media is an agent of socialisation

A

Media makes patriarchy seem normal and challenging The patriarchy is deviant.

What is the Marxist view on audiences?

A

The media is used to control people to benefit the ruling class. This is done through Althusser’s idea of ISA’s + RSA’s - creates a false consciousness, which refers to the proliterant being controlled by the ruling class to the point where it is unable to recognise its own oppressio

What is a interactionist view on audiences?

A

They see the media is influential, but not as much as feminist, and Marxist say. Stan Cohens folk devil (group of people negatively portrayed), moral panic (people feeling faint due to excessive amount of attention on a certain topic) - he also puts forward the idea of deviancy amplification, which refers to crime being worse due to reporting
