Igneous rocks formation

A

Created by volcanic activity when magma or lava cools, forming rocks made of crystals

A

Existing rocks that have been morphed/changed by extreme heat or pressure + usually comprised of layers

Q

How did tectonic processes help shape the overall landscape today

A
  • millions of years ago Britain was much closer to plate boundaries
  • active volcanoes + plate movements caused massive folds + faults in the rocks

Q

How did tectonic processes shape the uplands

A
  • around 300 million years ago tectonic processes caused molten magma, under intense pressure, to rise through the earths crust
  • some magma reached the surface as lava while some cooled + solidified underground
  • the areas above ground cooled + solidified and are now areas of high relief eg. Dartmoor in Devon

12
Q

What are the uplands formed from

A

Harder, more resistant rock that have eroded at a much slower rate

16
Q

How has the uplands been shaped

A

Tectonic activity + glaciation

17
Q

How did Dartmoor form

A
  • dome of magma developed underground
  • cooled to form granite + cracks known as joints
  • joints made it vulnerable to freeze thaw weathering
  • overtime as the granite became exposed on the surface, erosion + mass movement removed broken up granite downhill
  • blocks of rocks left standing
  • these forms tors eg. Bower man’s Nose surrounded by clitter slopes
18
Q

What is a scarp slope

A

Steep slope

19
Q

What is a dip slope

A

Gentler slope
