Overview Of The Respiratory System And Gas Laws Flashcards
What are some of the functions of the respiratory system?
Provides a supply of O2, disposal of CO”
How many generations are there of dividing airways?
23 generations of dividing airways, 1-16 are the conducting porions and therefore do not allow gas exchange, whereas 17-20 make up the respiratory zone and participate in gas exchange
What are the different stages of respiration?
The respiratory generator in the medulla, inspiratory muscles, expansion of airways, conducting airways, circulation
What happens in the process of expiration?
The neurones cease generating impulses and therefore the inspiratory muscles relax, and then the chest returns to size and this compresses the inflated lungs
What is boyles law?
The pressure is inversely proportional to the volume for a fixed quantity of gas at a constant temperature outside
What is the width of the alevolar capillary membrane?
0.3 um wide
What is the po2 in alevolar air?
13.3 kilopascals
What is the pO2 in venous blood?
6.0kPa
What is the concept of partial pressures?
Provided the constieunts of a gas mixture do not chemically react each component of the gas exerts its own partial pressure in proportion to its volume percentage within the mixture
What happens when a gas mixture is in contact with water?
Gas molecules enter the liquid to dissolve, and then the water molecules evaportate to enter the gas phase
What is henrys law?
The amount of gas dissolved is proportional to the pressure of gas within the liquid
What is the soluability coeffiacant of a gas?
The amount in mmol of fas that will dissolve in 1l of plasma at 37 degrees c when exposed to a given partial pressure
How is alevolar air different from atmospheric air?
It has added water vapour, and O2 is constantly leaving and CO2 entering the alevolar air because of the gas exchange that is occruing
How is gas exhcange regulated?
Chemoreceptors
How is the expansion of the chest muscles regulated?
Pulmonary reflexes,
