Overview of the Nervous System Flashcards
Describe the three main activities of the nervous system that are used to receive and communicate information
1) Sensation or receiving info-detects changes in the internal and external environment
2) Integration of the info into a single picture- combines info to form a conscious picture or an unconscious overview about the situation
3) reaction to the info by eliciting a response (or reflex)- induces a change in response to the integrated sensory signals
CNS
consists of the brain and spinal cord. responds to outgoing commands and receives and integrates sensory signals
PNS
consists of sensory receptors & nerves transmits information between the CNS & periphery& detects internal & external environmental change
Regions of the brain
1)Brainstem- the most caudal part of the brain which merges with the spinal cord
2)Cerebellum- sitting dorsal to the brainstem
3)Diencephalon- cranial to branching from the brainstem
4) Cerebrum- sitting cranial and dorsal to the diencephalon
PNS autonomic division/nervous system
operate automatically & unconsciously. it receives signals from internal organs & effect change by sending outgoing signals to cardiac muscle, smooth muscles,& glands
PNS somatic division/ nervous system
operates voluntarily & consciously. It receives signals from special senses as well as receptors in body tissues that monitor changes as touch and temperature
