Overview of the function of the cardiovascular system Flashcards
What side pumps blood through the pulmonary circulation ?
Right side
What side pumps blood through the systemic circulation ?
Left side
What does the blood flow system of the CVS carry ?
Bulk flow system:
- O2 and CO2 - nutrients - metabolites - hormones - heat
If the pumps are in series (right and left ventricle) what does this imply ?
Output must be equal
Why are most vascular beds in parallel ?
Ensures all tissues get blood,
Allows regional redirection of blood - can send different proportions of blood to match the specific requirements to each different part of the body.
Which elastic artery has a wide lumen and elastic wall ?
Aorta
what are muscular arteries ?
Other arteries, wide lumen, strong-non elastic wall, low resistnace conduit
What are resistance vessels ?
arterioles:
- narrow lumen, thick contractile wall
- control resistance and therfore flow
- allow regional redirection of blood
What are exchange vessels ?
capillaries:
- narrow lumen, thin wall
What are capacitance vessels ?
Veins and Venules:
- wide lumen, distensible wall
- low resistance conduit
Are valves active or passive ?
passive
What separates the ventricles ?
Interventricular septum
What vein enters the right atrium ?
Vena Cava
What is the mitral valve ?
The valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart, which has two tapered cusps
Define the tricuspid valve ?
A valve that is situated at the opening of the right atrium of the heart into the right ventricle and that resembles the mitral valve in structure but consists of three triangular membranous flaps—called also right atrioventricular valve
Define chordae tendinae ?
The chordae tendinae are tendons that connect the papillary muscles to the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve in the heart
Define papillary muscle ?
The papillary muscles are muscles located in the ventricles of the heart. They attach to the cusps of the atrioventricular valves via the chordae tendineae and contract to prevent inversion or prolapse of these valves on systole (or ventricular contraction)
What is the ‘plumbing’ of the heart ?
- Blood enetrs the RA
- Blood then flows through tricuspid valve into RV
- When the heart betas, the ventricles pushes blood through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery
- The pulmonary artery carries blood to the lungs where it picks up oxygen
- Blood then leaves lungs, returns to the heart through the pulmonary vein
- Blood enetrs the LA
- Blood flows through mitral valve into LV
- LV pumps blood through the aortic valve into the aorta
- The aorta feeds the rest of the body through the systemic circulation
- Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart from body via SVC and IVC
The vena cava pumps blood into the RA and the cycle begins again
