1948- formalised apartheid
1950’s- passive resistance, defiance campaign, freedom charter
1960’s- Sharpeville shootings. Banning of ANC and PAC. Formation of armed wings of ANC and PAC. Increased police brutality
1964- Rivonia trial- Mandela imprisoned and ANC leaders flee into exile. 1964 onwards became the silent 60’s. Gap in leadership for liberation fighters. Constant police brutality crushed further resistance. African people feel helpless
1976- Soweto uprising focuses world attention on SA
1980’s- SA led by P.W. Botha
