Ovary Flashcards
Ovarian Follicles
1) Primordial Follicles (oocyte stuck in meiosis prophase)
2) Growing Follicles – primary + secondary
3) Mature Follicles
Ovary Maturation
Cortex + Medulla
- primordial follicle
- primary follicle unilaminar –> multilaminar
- secondary follicle (collect fluid)
- Graafian follicle –> released oocyte in peritoneal cavity
- corpus hemorrhagicum
- corpus luteum (former antrum of follicle)
- corpus albicans (menstruate scar gone, pregnant scar)
Ovarian Cortex
- germinal epithelium
- tunica albuginea
Primordial Ovarian Follicle
- primary oocyte = arrested in prophase meiosis I
- squamous follicular cells
Primary Unilaminar Follicle
- primary oocyte
- zona pellucida (barrier of oocyte)
- cuboidal follicular cells
Primary Multilaminar Follicle
- primary oocyte
- zona pellucida (follicular cells breach w/ gap junctions)
- granulosa cells
Secondary Follicle
- primary oocyte
- granulosa cells (androgens –> estradiol) (FSH triggered)
- antrum (liquor folliculi)
- theca interna = secrete androgens (LH triggered)
- theca externa = stromal cells
Mature Follicle
- oocyte
- corona radiata (granulosa cells surround oocyte)
- cumulus oophorus (granulosa cells extended)
- theca interna
- theca externa
Ovulation
- angiogenesis blood vessels in theca interna = pressure
- LH –> oocyte complete meiosis I = polar body + ovum
- ovum arrested at metaphase meiosis II till sperm
Corpus Luteum
LH –> theca lutein cell = granulosa cell make estrogen
LH –> theca lutein cell make progesterone
FSH –> granulosa lutein cell make progesterone
Corpus Albicans
- remnant of corpus luteum
- atretic follicle = small remnant of follicle fail to develop
Ovarian Cycle
FSH + LH = stimulate follicle development
Estrogen secreted by growing follicles
LH surge = triggers ovulation
Estrogen + Progesterone secreted by Corpus Luteum
