What are the different physiological cysts?
Follicular cysts.
Corpus luteum cyst
Describe features of follicular cysts
Commonest type of ovarian cyst.
Occurs due to non-rupture of dominant follicle or failure of atresia in non-dominant follicle.
Commonly regresses after several cycles
Describe features of corpus luteum
Failure of corpus luteum to breakdown. More likely to present with intraperitoneal bleeding
Describe features of a dermoid cyst
Benign germ cell tumour. May contain skin, hair and teeth
Most common benign ovarian tumour in women < 30 years old.
Usually asymptomatic but torsion is more likely than with other tumours.
What are some benign epithelial tumours of the ovary
Serous cystadenoma - most common. Bilateral in 20%.
Mucinois cystadenoma -Typically large (may become massive). If ruptures then it may cause psudomyxoma peritonei
